Windows update error 80244022

A few days ago I updated my office laptop to Windows 10 build 1703. This part passed fine. However, after the reboot, Windows update reported an error with code 80244022. The explanation of this error is unclear – something went wrong.

After a few restarts, many retries, even deletion of the Software Distribution folder from the Windows folder, I searched the Net. Many answers were “it’s just gone”. As my error isn’t just gone with the wind, I knew that it’s time for the HEV suite, crowbar and deep dive into the world of logs and Windows services.

It’s a time for the tactical plan. We need to step by step check the whole update process. The high level flow of the update process is this:

Our computer is a WSUS client and it will connect to the local WSUS server. That WSUS server is a client for the Microsoft WSUS server.

In case that you’re a home user or your company doesn’t utilize the WSUS server, your computer will be the client for the Microsoft WSUS server.

The high-level plan

If you can’t download the newer updates, you should try this plan:

  1. Locate your WSUS server
  2. Check your network connection
  3. Check your update client.
  4. Try to reboot your machine and try updating again
  5. Try to stop your AV program.
  6. Check your firewall settings
  7. Check the logs on the machine
  8. (Optionally) delete all previously downloaded updates
  9. Check the WSUS server

Checking the WSUS settings in Registry

You can check the WSUS settings for your computer. This is important if you’re a home user, as you wouldn’t use the WSUS server. You can check this in the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate, value WUServer.

Now, only if you’re sure that you shouldn’t use the WSUS server, you can delete the values from this key. Restart the Windows update service. This could solve your problem.

Checking the logs

We will fast forward to the 7th step. As I always to say, the logs are my best friends. We should start with the Windows update client log. This log is usually located on the path C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log.

I opened it, but it wasn’t helpful at all:

I have only the error code and the longer message that the update failed with the error 0x80244022.

The good news is that there is another log – C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log. Inside you should see a more detailed explanation about the Windows update process.

In Windows 10, this file is empty. But you can generate it with the powershell command – Get-WindowsUpdateLog. Just open the powershell window and execute the command. Be patient.

After a while, this command will generate this log for you on the desktop. Now we can open it and analyze every step.

I analyzed all those lines and identified that the URL of WSUS service is correct. However, I found the HTTP error 503Service unavailable. This is progress.

I can conclude that my WSUS client works and that an error is on the WSUS side. It’s time to take the game to the next level.

Checking the WSUS server

I logged on the WSUS server. Now, I will check the services.

OK, all services are running. That looks good. The next step is the IIS console, as the error is HTTP (Web) related.

I opened the IIS management console. Everything looks fine. As the first step, I checked the Web site WSUS Administration and its bindings. It should be bound to the port 8530 for HTTP traffic. There should be one more binding for HTTPS on the port 8531, but this one is not so important now.

I tried to open the Web page from the IIS console. I got the same error as when I accessed the page from IE – Service unavailable.

Now I recall that this application is also .net based. Therefore, I switched to the Application pools page and found the problem.

The WSUS application uses its own pool named WsusPool. This pool was stopped. I started it again and… voila! The WSUS service runs again.

Is this the end?

This WSUS server is a part of the SCCM server. Therefore, the problem can be in any service that works on that server.

I faced this problem a few times in a row and found how to manually fix it. However, I would to have a permanent solution. My first action for the permanent solution is to shorten the idle time-out from 20 to 5 minutes. Also, it’s wise to increase the pool’s internal memory.

Although this problem can appear again, it’s important that I have a very clear procedure for the troubleshooting process. Furthermore, I now have a documented solution for this issue, which will help us to recover the WSUS server much faster.

Be systematic and don’t give up to easy.

(Edit 28.09.2017.) A permanent solution is described in detail in this post.

Stay tuned.
